There seems to be a lot of confusion with Activated carbon products. I'll shed some light on it. Don't buy Generic filters, you'll be sorry.
These are the "A" filter,(HRF-AP1) and are made with Activated Charcoal Carbon and BEST for smoke odors.
Pro's
1 - Excellent for smoke of any kind
2 - Great for kitchen odors
3 - Great for pet odors
4 - Good for chemical fumes and odors
Con's
1 - Has to be replaced periodically. (3 Months on average)
2 - Most carbon filters are overpriced
These are made with Activated Charcoal Carbon. Carbon made from COAL is the air purifier best odor absorber and smokers BEST friend.
Don't pay attention to other reviewers, they don't know what they're talking about. Just make certain you're buying Genuine Honeywell.
=====================================================================================================
The A-Plus (HRF-APP1) filters are made with Activated Carbon made with Zeolite/Volcanic Rock.
Pro's
1 - Excellent for chemical fumes and odors (VOCs)
2 - Good for kitchen odors
3 - Good for pet odors
4 - Good for new car smells
5 - Can be re-activated and then re-used. Just Vacuum and then place in the sun for a day
Con's
1 - Hard to find in it's pure form
2 - Not available for most air purifiers

I purchased this filter for my Honeywell air filtration system model 50250. The filter came in a Honeywell box and I have included photos of the front and back of the box as well as of the filter. The box states that this filter replaces the old Honeywell pre-filter model 38002 which is what my device specifies to purchase. I compared the new filter to one of the older versions and they look identical and they are the same thickness.
On the back of the box, which I photographed, is a table that tells you how many filters you can cut out of their one filter based on the model of the air cleaning system you own. In my case with the larger air cleaning system I can only get one filter out of the contents of the box. I hope the information is helpful for you. It would have been nice if the photos on the web page already included photos of the box. This product without a doubt is a Honeywell product.
The filter does contain activated carbon to deodorize the air and help to freshen it. It also is designed to trap larger particles like dust, lint fibers and pet fur. We have been using the air cleaning fan for over 15 years. About every 3 months the filters get clogged with so much dust that the red light on the top of the air cleaner comes on and advises you that the pre-filter is dirty. We actually own several shop vacuums and we suck the dust layer off of the pre-filter and insert the combination filter cartridge back into the fan and use it for another three months. After a couple of uses we replace the pre-filter. This may remove a lot of the dust but of course the activated carbon may no longer help to remove any odors in the room.
We used to purchase these at a local store and now their website and store people state that this model filter, HRF-AP1, is discontinued. This filter seems to be working well and we will now continue purchasing these from Amazon.

SAVE MONEY by removing the pre-filter every few months (DO THIS OUTSIDE DUE TO FILTER DUST/CARBON DUST/DIRT/PET DANDER that comes off very easily). These fiber filters are basically used to stop BIG particles of Dirt and Dust BEFORE they can reach and clog the expensive interior HEPA DRUM FILTER it wraps around. Instead of throwing them away and buying tons of REPLACEMENTS BRAND NEW (really just to get the initial coating of CARBON DUST that removes ODORS), First, vacuum the filter flat on newspaper. If you have a air compressor, blow through from behind dirty side to remove the majority of dirt and dust. Then, run back and forth under HOT WATER to remove embedded stuff. Allow to dry before wrapping around HEPA DRUM FILTER and attaching to itself with Velcro Strips. All you lose is the coating of CARBON DUST for ODORS. It will stop the large dirt and dust particles like a brand new pre-filter - and you can do this MANY, MANY times before shelling out another $13.00 and covering yourself and everything around you with carbon dust.

This has scored lines that divide it into 8 strips. The 50150-N requires a width of 3 strips, so I can make 2 filters out of it. I bought two of these, not realizing this. It is thicker than the stock filter it replaced, but fits well. There was some shedding of charcoal when I made the cuts. I expected this from other reviews, so I made the cuts on my workbench using sharp snips and the resulting dust really wasn't that significant . I am not sure how the dust could be eliminated without using a different, thicker filter material which would reduce airflow. This serves two purposes; prolong the life of the hepa filter, and odor absorption. The crisp, clean smell seemed to be lost after about 3-4 months with the stock filter and I have to wonder if this will perform better being thicker, but I waited 6 months to replace the original and it was so caked with dust that I know I went too far.Of course, every ones mileage will vary depending on the environment the filter is in. I am going to try using the 2 strips left over from each box to make a fifth filter by overlapping them. I will update my review if that does not work, though I can't see why it wouldn't. Based on my experience with this, vs the reviews of the generic filters I looked at, I am pleased with the product and glad I spent the extra 3-4 dollars.

This item works really well to give the Hepa Filter R a longer lasting life. Although the product says in the description to replace every 3 months I usually go for about 6 months. I have had this filter in my air purifier for over 5 months now and really impressed in how well it works. This pre-filter keeps my Filter R from getting dirty and collecting a ton of dirt. All you have to do is vacuum it because it traps a ton of dust and pet hair. For house hold odor trapping I would have to say for the first week it seemed to do its job. But honestly if you have a smelly house or cook a lot those odors will still be there. I personally use this filter for keeping the important filter and somewhat expensive filter (Honewell Filter R True Hepa) from clogging up, not for getting rid of odors.
Pros:
- Traps a lot of particles like dust and pet hair
- Easy to clean if you don't want to replace it often
- Can make a lot of pre-filters depending on what model air purifier you have
- Comes with a cutting pattern sheet so you can cut to size
Cons:
- Can accumulate a lot of dust/pet hair/ lint/etc. and could potentially decrease performance of air purifier (might need to replace often or vacuum often)
- Can be a hassle to cut to size
- Odor trapping/eliminating carbon activating feature doesn't last very long

These have a some metal in them unlike the ones that came with the machine. I like it better because they stand up now. Rinse and let them completely dry out before you put it away. Works great. We only use them in the winter months.

I've had my Honeywell Air Purifier for several years and have found these replacement Pre-Filters easy to install.
I always like to use original manufacturer replacement items to assure the equipment will operate to mfr. specifications.

I have 3 air cleaners and use the Universal filters all the time. I do have to cut them to size, but not a problem becaues the filters are easy to cut. These are the best filters as they pick up the tiniest of particles. I have two dogs and the filters pick up all the flying fur and any dust in the air on a daily basis - that's a plus. The air cleaners are used 24/7 - in the winter when all is usually closed up. Quick delivery and would I recommend this product & the seller.

Great pre-filter for my Honeywell 17000. I live in a basement (huzzah) and the pre-filter has made a definite difference in the quality of my sleep and breathing down there. You also get enough material for almost 3 pre-filters for the Honeywell 17000 model.

This allows for 2 carbon prefilter changes by cutting to size for the HEPA machine. An easy way to size is to install on the HEPA filter securing with velcros and then cut near outside edge. It definitely traps larger particles.
