I'm not what you'd call a handyman, although I've been working to get better at that. I will now at least try a home project before passing on it. So, when our 15-year garbage disposal died I had another opportunity. I determined our old unit to be a Badger 5 1/2 HP (this exact item). I didn't have time to wait for the item to arrive from Amazon so I went to Home Depot and coughed up an extra $20 for the Badger 500 - Home Depot's branded version of this item. They are identical except for the name & sticker.
Save yourself a lot of hassle and go with the same brand & model. By doing so you'll avoid having to remount and mess with the drain & sink connections. Save the old power cord so you don't have to buy a new one. You'll need to do some very minimal wiring work to pull the wires from the terminals in the old disposal and attach them to the disposal. Make sure to attach the green grounding wire to avoid getting shocked when you switch on the disposal!
The whole project took me about 1 hour 15 minutes. I should mention that includes all the prep work (pulling everything out from below the sink), clean up time, and a bathroom break. I put on a favorite album of mine and went to work while my wife took the kiddo to a playground.
You can do this yourself. I couldn't bring myself to pay more for the installation than the actual item. The installation would have been around $200! It's your choice, however. Personally, I now have a sense of accomplishment and I saved my family $200, which I can now put toward my kid's birthday party.
Tip: save the old parts, as you never know when you'll need a new washer or screw.

The old InSinkerator garbage disposal unit we installed in the addition to our home failed recently. It didn't fail from overuse, it failed because it wasn't used frequently enough. Like letting a car sit instead of running it periodically, the unit dried out and rusted until we noticed the water dripping under the sink. Since I am not handy by nature, I referred to my home repair guru (YouTube) and watched a video on how to replace the old unit. After convincing myself that I was not the only man to ever replace his own garbage disposal unit, I checked with the company to determine the proper replacement model and ordered it from Amazon.
The beauty of having a proper replacement was the ability of being able to use the old mount instead of taking it off and replacing it with the new one provided. Although it might be necessary in your situation, my old mount was in great shape. After watching my tutorial I unpacked the unit and followed the instructions for turning off the power and water, unhooking the pipes, and pulling out the old unit. So far so good. Then I removed the small cover plate for the electrical connection, disconnected the three wires that go to the power cord, reconnected the wires to the new unit, and remounted the discharge connector. The hardest part was probably trying to hold the new unit up to the old mount long enough to properly twist it on. It would be a lot easier if you had an extra pair of hands around but I managed it on my own. Then it was a simple matter of hooking the plumbing back up, tightening the mount properly, plugging the unit back into the wall outlet, and turning the water back on. Step back, take a deep breath, turn on the switch, and (hopefully) "Voila!". I let the water and the unit run for awhile just to make sure that there were no leaks. After letting it sit overnight I'll try it again before putting all my tools away.
While you might not be especially handy around the house, simply say to yourself " millions of other guys/gals have done this particular task before me". It might take you a little longer the first time but the payoff is saving money and a big boost in confidence.

We love our new InSinkErator Badger. We had an older model of this exact product and size. It lasted about 5 years after daily use and abuse. It started leaking into the motor and under the cabinet. We found it had rust in the motor and that was that.
This one was super easy to install. We replaced the disposal part only. With the additional parts being the same size as the older one, we did not change out everything to the new parts. We used the old cord on the new machine also. She purrs like a kitten! I did not realize how sick the old one was sounding until hearing the smoothness of the new one.
Great quality product at a reasonable price. Not a necessity in the kitchen, but we like it.
Highly recommend this one!

This unit replaced a 20 year old Badger 5. I ordered this one because the clearance under the sink was really tight and if the replacement was the same dimensions as the original, I would be in luck. Indeed it fit perfectly. I used the wiring off the old one and the installation including putting on the wiring took about 20 - 30 minutes. An advantage was that I did not have to replace the portion of the unit that is bonded to the porcelain sink or the mounting bracket. For a 1/2 HP unit it seems to still have plenty of power to grind most foods. Stay way from cramming a bunch of pasta or huge amounts of fiber down the drain in anything other than small portions. No disposal will handle that well.

I have owned my houses before and I work as a licensed plumber so I install/replace disposers on a regular basis. This is my choice for the disposer. It's powerful enough to do anything you throw at it and yet quiet. The price here is much less than any brick and mortar place for the average consumer and shipping is quick. I highly recommend this even over the more expensive models.

Was hesitant on a few of the 1-star ratings. But glad I just ignored them!
In manufacturing there is a percent of items that are defective. That's life! We've all experienced it. I couldn't imagine this being cracked unless someone applied insane/impossible in the home forces to it.
Yesterday, I replaced the same 1/2 hp in-sink-erator I suspect was installed when my condo was built in 1998 with extreme ease. A twist up and on the old mount, 2 bolts, a conduit junction, screw, 2 wire nuts, a screw and done!
I noticed a month ago some rust drippings under my counter. Didn't see any wet though. Friday I ran the disposer and suddenly felt water on the floor. Took apart and found the pinhole. Thought about welding it, but upon disassembly and inspection determined the whole thing was weeks away from rotting out totally. I had to use a 5lb deadblow hammer and about 30 hits to get it apart. For the price and a few days wait, I don't see a reason to pay 3x more for the same purpose, that will probably last the same 17 years mine did.
I literally can grind up a plastic fork with this unit!
Note: photo is from what I suspect to be an 17yo unit!

Purchased to replace a 7 year old in sink Erator. It was installed by the builder and has the same dimensions as the original. The old one was a 1/3 HP and this one is more powerful at 1/2 HP.
I was able to easily use the existing pig tail power cord.
I received it about two hours ago. Took me around an hour to install, but I did take my time.
Instructions are great, with easy to see and follow pictures.
I have used this brand for years. Nice to have a quality USA made product.
You can buy brands that are twice to three times more expensive. Why? Maybe this will last 5 to 7 years but in my experience the more expensive brands last 10 years, so far cheaper to buy this brand.

I purchased this disposer as an upgrade to our old one. We previously owned a 1/3 hp model, and it was slowly falling apart (It was over 10 years old) So we purchased this model. It arrived quickly, and it comes with great instructions. One note: You will need to swap your old powercord over from your old unit. This does not come with a power cord. I purchased a power cord kit at Home Depot, it's made by InSinkErator, and only cost about $12.00. You will also want some plumbers putty, but that's it! Everything else is included. I'm 24 years old, and a female with almost no experience in home repairs. But I did it by myself, without any problems. Like I said, very easy to install, and the instructions are very clear. It works great! Whatever I put down the drain, disappears almost instantly. I wish it was a little quieter, but I know they sell insulted units that are much quieter. I just didn't have the budget for one of those models. Overall, for the price you pay, this is a fantastic value!

Bought this to replace the one in our new house and I would definitely recommend this to anyone replacing a garbage disposal! I was a little leery about buying this for my husband to install because he had never installed one, however having one already hooked up made the replacing very easy! The directions were very easy for him to follow and it works perfectly!
The only thing I will say to anyone buy this that: YOU NEED TO BUY A SEALER SEPARATELLY in order to get a tight, leak free seal! That is not stated in the directions!

Its a good garbage disposal for the price. Now keep in mind that this thing isn't designed like a wood chipper. It's not going to handle the big stuff like chicken bones, but it handles most other things like apple cores or orange peel without issue. Installation wasn't hard if you have a little bit of handy man skills. Wiring is very basic. Simply connect 2 wires plus the ground (MAKE SURE POWER IS OFF FIRST!). If wiring scares you, hire a handyman or electrician to wire it for you. I was able to remove my old disposal, install this one and wire it up in just about an hour. Not a bad project.
In terms of longevity, it should last many years.
