I generally don't leave reviews especially if one has such high ratings and thousands of reviews. However,I felt compelled to review this one because when I was deciding to purchase or not, I didn't see my particular concern listed, which was: can or will it effectively clean our 10-year old grout? My husband always did the mopping because his strength lended itself to being more effective and faster (plus I hated mopping and the mess that came with it!). Unfortunately, I lost my husband unexpectedly a few months ago and realized I would now be the one mopping. I decided to once again research the steam mops. I have always been frustrated with how awful our grout looks, through 3children now grown and two labs and 2 cats, plus a husband with forever muddy, dirty work boots. I have to say, this mop deserves its 5-stars even with a few minor concerns (see below).

First, the pros:
1. Easy to put together-takes maybe a minute including the time to grab the screwdriver to put the handle on.
2. Price is beyond reasonable, in my opinion
3. Love never having to buy cleaners again!
4. Steam is great - heats up super quick and if general cleaning can cover most of my 800 sf of flooring in the about 20 min that the tank lasts (which was a concern because it used to take a good hour with a reg mop!).
5. Changing/refilling the water if you need to is as easy as pulling it out of the handle and taking the lid off. Takes about 30 seconds to complete the process and be back to mopping.
6. Cleaned my grout!!! Granted I used the little scrubber brush on the back of the unit (which I do wish were a little longer), but I carefully pressed on it with my foot so it would "scrub" and reach down in the gap, and in two min time it went from black to nearly new clean. I expect over time it will only improve. *note- see below for warnings/concerns with regards to this aspect
7. Floors were clean and almost instantly dry even with 2-3 run overs.
8. You can let it "sit" on an area particularly hard to clean and it will also sanitize after about 15 seconds
9. It gets super hot - yes, it really does steam steam (much like a new iron does when you press the steam button)
10. No residue left on the floor.
11. Worked on hard tile as well as hardwood floors.
12. Light -easy to carry upstairs, etc. And has a decently long cord so you don't have to keep unplugging room to room.

Now, not sure these are "cons" but perhaps more of concerns/cautions to not be misleading I any comments above:
1. When using your foot to press down on the scrubber be careful! The steam can burn your toes (yes, it gets that hot - which is good!) and can also make them wet so you could slip/fall easily. It took me some practice but so far have still found it the preferred way to go - though perhaps a scrubbie by hand could work as well if you really wanted to go that route (or had kids in need of "making amends").
2. While I said above that the floors remain relatively dry even after a few swipes, I need to mention that if trying to deep clean the floors can become quite wet esp with the highest steam setting. This is in part due to the high steam level combined with the mop head getting saturated and no longer able to absorb the water or dirt. At this point you can either have spare mop heads or follow up with a towel or other mop to dry the door and pick up the loosened dirt (easier than actual mopping as the hard part is done!). Again this isn't a defect simply a matter of practicality and really only an issue if you become obsessed as I did once you see the dramatic difference you can achieve with this thing! Regardless it can become quite slippery and even a little "messy" so wanted to mention.
3. If you leave the steamer on a spot for too long, at least with my porcelain floor, the flooring retains that heat for some time and can burn your feet if you're not wearing shoes (just a matter of prob 5-10 min but again, yes it gets that hot!). Not a big deal, but surprised my feet when I happened to step on them - not a big deal for adults, but if you have crawling or walking toddlers maybe good to know (however on the plus, they now can literally eat off the floor without concern due to the sanitizing properties). :)
4. While I did use tap water, you really should (and I will be going forward) use filtered water. I just didn't have any on hand and didn't want to run out because it was Christmas Eve.
5. While it fits beside toilets and gets in small spaces, getting the grout right up next to cabinets or walls, etc will prob require some old fashioned getting on ground and using some "Goo Gone" cleaner and scrubbing. Note, it will clean up against the walls, just not easy to scrub there.

Now with that said, proof is in the pudding so to speak, and so I included a before and after of one area of my floor so you can judge for yourself. The time lapse was approx 2min using highest steam and a little foot pressure on the scrubbie. For the close up you can tell it's the same area because I believe there's a crack in one of the tiles - though even that became less noticeable after cleaning! :)

Ok, so I've only used it once so far, but I'm hooked. My vinyl floors seemed always dirty and a regular mop never got them clean, just swished around dirty water. The floor pattern has little indentations that trap dirt. After unpacking the mop this morning, I put it to the test. YES, my floor was much cleaner and the mop worked effortless. No more scrubbing on my hands & knees with bleach. I hope it continues to perform just as beautifully. I'm going to clean the floor at least once a week now!

Hi. I'm an artist. Which means I don't earn much... but all the chores of a house husband. I don't mind most chores. I do windows, despise dusting, and resent mopping. But you have to mop the porcelain floors or you can't invite guests over.

It took a long time for me to figure out how to mop properly. I used one of those sponge mops (which you can pull back into itself to ring out the dirty water). Instead of ringing out into the same bucket, I'd ring into the sink and even wash the sponge. Picture this. Even in a moderately sized condo, I'd rinse the mop at least 20 times during once mopping. That's a lot of hot water. So is the two gallon bucket I'd have to fill with Simple Green. Gallons of water and chemicals.

And when I was done? MEH said the floor. It was better but not optimal.

So my mop broke and I went to replace it. Couldn't. The Rollomatic was no longer at OSH. Which sucks because I have a replacement head that's now useless. I went to Amazon to see if they carry it. They do, but they also carry this Bissell baby.

It looks like cheap plastic. Know why? To keep it light. If it were metal you'd never use it. This light design is just right and about 1/4th of the work of the Rollomatic. And there's no bucket to move around. The 'bucket' is a small reservoir that could hold two cans of Coke in it. Maybe one and half.

When you open the box, assembly should be easy but for one thing: when you attach the handle to the unit, the handle can be slid in upside down. Which means when you go to put the one screw in it mysteriously won't work. I'm not the handyman type but I know 'engineers' can paint on a little red line on the handle and unit and tell us to make them 'match' each other to avoid this mistake. Or shape the rod in such a way that it can only slide in the correct way. A silly little design flaw.

Okay. There's no on or off switch. You just plug in. A little blue light blinks. About a minute later it's ready. Then you pick what steaming power you want. Light, Medium, Heavy. Understand the unit comes wearing a 'gentle mop' and includes a 'scrubby mop' in the box. So it therefore comes with six levels of intensity: gentle light, gentle medium, gentle heavy, scrubby light, scrubby medium, scrubby heavy.

I put off buying a new mop for ages and so it was particularly dirty. On my tile floor in the kitchen and major walkways, scrubby mop/heavy steam was needed. In other areas the gentle mop/medium steam did the trick. I should say here that I had to change from the gentle mop to the scrubby mop because the gentle mop got filthy fast. If Bissell wanted to be the bestest -- they'd include an additional set of mop heads for the same price. If that didn't get through: if you have a ginormous home to mop, you'll need more of the mop heads if the floor is particularly dirty.

A few cool things --

1. Under the cabinets in my kitchen is that part of floor the normal mop could barely clean. Grime would slowly build up and the only way to fix that was paper towels, spray, and hands & knees. This Bissell? Cleaned MONTHS OF FILTH in minutes. (This is what made me first consider taking the Bissell out for dinner and a movie.)

2. You don't need Simple Green and Pine Sol. This is STEAM. And you don't need a ton of water. (This is when I considered asking the Bissell back to my place.)

3. What was a solid hour of mopping is about 25 minutes with the Bissell. And that old school mopping used to make me so tired I refused to clean the upstairs linoleum bathroom... which is only a few feet wide. I did that too... in two minutes. (This is when I poured the wine for the Bissell and dimmed the lights a little.)

4. Because it's now so easy to 'mop'... I can do this weekly. Instead of what seemed to be every 4-6 weeks. (I told you I didn't like mopping, didn't I?)

(Oh, and this is when my wife caught me and the Bissell in a compromised position. But this is my only affair and I won't apologize! Damn it this thing is awesome. Sure I wish she was a cheaper date, but hey, she sure can make me steamy.)

<3

THREE MONTHS UPDATE:

Yes, my affair with this thing is still on-ongoing. Maybe not as hot and heavy, but yes -- there is still love. However, I stumbled upon something which requires rewording and correcting.

Above I said that grime came off with the first uses. And it did. What I didn't know until recently was that it doesn't remove ALL the grime. I had six or so years of it building up slowly, despite my Simple Green mopping and Bissell steaming. I basically forget my floor was matte finished, and you could clearly see a grimy 'shine'.

So I got on my hands and knees with a harsh plastic brush, hot water, and some soapy water with some OxyClean mixed it. Surprise surprise -- this cleaned off YEARS of gunk. What I thought were scratches in the porcelain floor were really scratches in the gunk. This is why people hire people when they sell their home to come in and use those machines to REALLY clean the floor.

And so my question will become IS the Bissell enough to stave off this 'gunk' that builds up -- and how long before I'm forced to scrub hands and knees style. If I can go a full year without needing to scrub so hard, I'll be satisfied but not delighted. If it's two to three, delighted but not thrilled. If the Bissell prevents me from ever having to scrub the floor again, I'll be Michael Jackson Thrilled.

So I'll come back the first moment I have an answer to that question.

Can't believe what my Shark was leaving behind! My brand new Bissell pads are so disgusting they may not be salvageable. I'd rather buy new ones though than have all of that left on my floors where babies are crawling. Easy to use, various steam output a nice and useful feature, visible steam. Used only once so far so I can't speak to longevity. My previous machine didn't necessarily break but simply stopped being effective after only 3 years. I expect the Bissell powerfresh to stick around longer.

This mop has done an amazing job at cleaning my floors! I have never used a steam mop on my hardwood floors but it did not disappoint! I have gone through two pads cleaning the downstairs and I would probably go through another one if I had time to go over the floors again. I can really see a difference! The grooves between the planks are much lighter! I love it!
I ordered an extra set of pads, making my total 4.
I also used the scented inserts and they smell very nice!

I did quite a bit of research before buying. In fact, I used to work for a competitor to Bissell and was involved in work to review and develop products made, so I know a thing or two about floor cleaning (vacuums, rug "shampooers", hand-helds, sweepers, and so on). It's also why we decided to replace all the carpet in our downstairs and I endeavor to get rid of it upstairs some day when budgets allow!

On to the Powerfresh Steam Mop: Overall this product does what it says it will do - it steams and cleans the floor.

First, a response to many reviews I've read of this and other products: it is absolutely true that you "push around dirt" - guess what - even when you are on your hands and knees to scrub your floors, you do that! Mop buckets contain dirty water. Even with clean water and a clean mop, one swipe and you are now pushing that dirt onto the floor with the next swipe. Likely the "cleanest" clean is using multiple towels each soaking in a cleaning/hot water solution that gets pushed on a small section of the floor before being tossed into a bucket (for later washing in the machine) and using a fresh towel for the next section of floor. Usually, one needs to use multiple towels to the dry the floor when using this method. It is time consuming and quite a bit of work. This mop does clean dirt up, but like any cleaning method, that dirt is stuck to the item used to swipe it up (the pad) and then pushed around. The benefit of a steam mop is that at least steam is used to cut down on bacterial and germ spread (the heat will at least kill most of it).

Now, pros and cons:

PROs:

- the mop is very easy to assemble and set up out of the box - just a couple parts to snap together - one screw to hold the handle onto the body and it's ready - 5 minutes max
- the mop is very easy to set up each time you use it - I change the pad to a clean one after each use, so it stays ready in my closet. The small blue container that you fill with water snaps out and there is a twist cap on it - twist off, fill (recommended is distilled water, but I've used tap), and replace it. Plug in the machine, wait about 15 seconds and the flashing blue light stays on and it is ready.
- the mop is very easy to use, There is one button to press. Press it once for low steam, another time for higher level of steam, another time for the highest level of steam, and a fourth time stops the steam. That's it for controls. NOTE: it DOES turn off if you press it around to the fourth time - at least one reviewer claimed that this was not the case, but it does turn off.
- the mop is very lightweight, making it easy to carry upstairs to the bathrooms in our house, even when the tank is full (the tank is small, but that is not a bad thing, as it doesn't take much water to keep steam going)
- the head of the mop is a good size and is very maneuverable in that you can twist it sideways and get into small spaces and under things
- steam is produced and spread out more than in some other steam mops, which have just one hole where the steam is released and concentrated
- the mopped areas dry quickly - I usually use the lower or mid settings and I find the floor is dry again within 5 minutes
- I have not used the little flip down scrubbie brush because I haven't needed to: even with the gungy spots on my floor, passing over the spot a few times or allowing the steam to stay on that spot for a few seconds then swiping has been enough to remove the stubborn spots!
- it comes with two pads - a regular and a scrubbier one - both work well. They both wash easily in the washing machine (do not use fabric softener and do not put in a drier!)
- the pads have a little tag that sticks up and stays clean and dry - I do not have to touch anything dirty to remove the pad when I'm done cleaning!
- the mop is very quiet - just a slight steam sound and a little clicking sound
- the convenience level means I have cleaned my floors much more frequently than I ever did with any other method I've tried. With 2 cats, a dog, and 2 young kids my floors get dirty quickly. The mop gets used regularly and that means I "push around" less dirt when I do use it, so my floors are pretty darned clean! When I used other methods that were more difficult and time consuming, I did it less and my floors were a lot dirtier for that reason.
- it stands on its own - no need to lean it against stuff in the closet

CONs:
this is a short list and really they are more or less "wishes"

- the cord isn't that long which means I have to unplug and replug for each room, but then it doesn't get too cumbersome. I love rewind cords and that would be just awesome.
- the "fragrance disks" are awful - they give you a couple free to try - UGH! hard to insert, makes your hands smell, the fragrance is overpowering and "fake" and probably not good for you, like most fragrances that aren't 100% natural. There's no point in those, if you ask me, so just skip them
- the sticker that is on the control panel that shows the 3 levels of steam already pealed off on the corner - I pressed it back on, but I'm guessing that will need to be re-glued repeatedly - I've only used it 4 or 5 times.

BOTTOM LINE: I've been very happy with this floor mop. It's simple and that is part of what makes it a good product and makes it more likely that I use it. I did buy another set of mop pads so I could change them as I go if I have particularly dirty floors. If you have a lot of tile, vinyl, laminate, and/or wood in your home, I highly recommend.

WOW! Just WOW! I have a steam mop and I have a little boy; I steam mop my floors on a weekly basis. While my original one (different brand) worked well, I didn't think it really powered through the grime and gross that little boys and big dogs track in. I especially noticed this to be true in the bathroom. No matter how much I steam mopped the bathroom, I could never get them clean enough. I got the Bissell Power Fresh Steam Mop and took it for a spin in just my kitchen and half bath, WOW! I can say with complete confidence my floors are now clean enough to eat off of. I'm a huge fan of this product and would recommend it to anybody! I'm honestly horrified at what we've been walking around on and I'm looking forward to an empty house so I can get my OCD fix with the floors.

This cleaner works great! We have white porcelain tiles that show everything, even reflections of the surrounding furniture and windows. If the floor is free of debris to start with then this cleaner will remove greasy spots, dust, and smudges easily. The more loose debris on the floor the harder it is to use this cleaner so I recommend sweeping first. It isn't so great at cleaning the grout lines but I didn't expect it too, I have the Hoover floormate for that which is perfect for deep cleaning the grout occasionally.

Incredibly impressed!! I have floors with terrible little nooks and crannys that collect dirt. Swiffering did nothing but take the surface dirt off. This steam mop heats and dissolves the dirt wherever it is. Pic 1 is before and pic 2 is after!!! I love this!!

It came with an attachment so you can steam your carpets and I used it in combination with the scent disc to steam a mattress. Oh my gosh, that mattress smells amazing and is completely deodorized. As a foster parent, I heart any fast way to sanitize a bed. I will not be hiring companies anymore!

What I do not like, is the fabric pads cannot be bleached and do not return to their white color. I've attached a picture of mine after two washings.

Bissell, you should develop some safe type of stain remover for these pads, pretty please!!

All in all, 5 stars...absolutely.

I was going to give this five stars but it stopped working last night. I bought it in December of 2013. It has been four months since we bought it. Up until last night I thought it was the greatest invention since the wheel. Today I called Bissell and reported how it just stopped working. He didn't ask but we always used distilled water in it. I used it several times a week to clean my ceramic floor tile. The grout is colored…a light champagne…and it was professionally sealed last fall. I think the Bissell 1940 did a good job of cleaning the grout.

Water on the tile took a few minutes to dry. It never streaked and on occasion I would touch the tile to see if it was actually warm. It never felt hot but it was so much better than regular mopping and it saved me considerable time and backache.

I am semi disabled, a small woman and I love the lightweight feel of this machine. Up until last night I was very happy with it's performance.

When I called today they told me that since I registered the product I am entitled to a replacement machine. This steamer comes with a two year limited warranty…I guess it covers a machine that stopped working in mid mopping…no power, no light, no steam, nada…I am to cut off the entire power cord, and when they send me a prepaid shipping label, I am to send the cord back to them. When they receive it they will send me a new machine. I guess you can't beat that deal. The man I spoke to was very gracious and courteous and so sympathetic to my problem.

After I finish writing this I am going to purchase another machine using my Prime account. I bought so many replacement pads for this machine…it seemed silly to buy another brand. Since Bissell stands behind their product I see no reason to try another brand. They all seem to have similar complaints unless you buy a commercial heavy duty machine.

I was extremely happy with it's performance but for those of you who are still reading this review, I am afraid to recommend it. I can only relate my recent experience with this product. I did see a lot of reviews like mine where the machine stopped after a few months of use. Perhaps they all came from the same batch of cleaners? Read ALL of the negative reviews before you decide to buy.

UPDATE! April 8, 2015…
I am adding a fifth star to my review…yes my Bissell mop died…but Bissell immediately sent me a new one plus I purchased another and both are still going strong…I use both several times a week to cover a whole lot of ceramic tile.

We recently had some construction inside our home. Insurance said they would bring someone in to clean…they lied…so each day when the workers left I used my mops…those were the hardest working mops in town…they did a better job than the professional people we brought in to clean and seal our grout…I am so glad I stuck with this Bissell mop! Perhaps there were a few manufacturing problems before but the replacement and my second one have done a splendid job on our ceramic floor tiles.

Update Sept 2015. My two mops are still going strong and they have both been put to the test. We completed the construction…remodeling two bathrooms…we installed new carpeting throughout the house and you would think carpet layers would be neat…nice yes but not neat. We had someone fall through the ceiling in our dining room and insulation covered everything including the tile in the entryway and a part of the family room and hallway. My Bissell steam mops cleaned the tile and the tiles looked great…they still do. We have had electricians, air-conditioning repairmen…lots of delivery people…and each time they left I mopped with my Bissell. This machine is a true workhorse. I ONLY use distilled water in them,..never sink water or any other bottled water. I do not spray anything on the floor like a cleaner or vinegar…and we have dropped the water tank as well as the caps and never had a problem with them. I was going to buy a third…I waited and the price has increased by $10 but it is still less than we paid for the ones we now have. For me the steam mop is a life saver. I am disabled and I can keep my floors probably cleaner than when I used a regular mop or when I would scrub on my knees. I bought both of my mops from Amazon.
