Filrete Allergen Defense Filters
As you manage your family’s allergies on a day-to-day basis, you’re looking for options to help reduce allergens in your air. Filtrete Allergen Defense air filters turn your central heating and cooling system into a whole house air cleaner. Developed to pull in and trap unwanted particles such as pollen and pet dander from the air, these filters help capture allergens as well as large particles like lint and household dust. For maximum performance, change your filter at least every 90 days.
Tips to improve air quality
Dust:
Regular dusting prevents the buildup of allergens and other pollutants.
Upgrade your filter:
Choose a Filtrete Filter with a higher Microparticle Performance Rating (MPR) to remove more particles from the air in your home
Wash and vacuum:
Stick to a weekly schedule when it comes to washing your bedding and vacuuming your carpets and furniture.
Control the humidity:
Maintain humidity between 30 and 50 percent for maximum comfort.
Change your filter:
Change your filter every 3 months — or more often if you light candles, smoke, use your fireplace, run your fan continuously, own pets or are doing construction.
Get an alarm:
Install a carbon monoxide alarm and test it regularly.

These are great- just be careful that too much filtration can OVERHEAT your heat and air units

I was using the Filtrete dark blue 1500 rated filters and thought they were great. But eventually I found the air flow was less and less and then it almost stopped altogether. I had to call my Heat/ AC guys and they told me that if I used the higher rated filter (1500 or so, different for each system), the one that 'stopped' more allergens/ dust/ etc, that these high rated ones fill up quickly with all the gunk the catch, and that they can slow down the air flow so much that it may cause your heat/ AC machinery to overheat and damage itself.

He switched me to the red Filtretes- they are rated 1000 and not 1500. If you truly need higher levels of filtration, make sure your heat/ ac system can handle it, and maybe you have to change the filters more often (the really highly rated filters grab EVERYTHING so all the dust etc builds up much more quickly and could block the air flow entirely in less time than say the red 1000 ones. So stay as low as you can on the ratings, but if you have to block extra things like dust or mites or allergens, ask your heat/ AC guy to tell you which filter to use, knowing it will capture this much dust/mites/ allergens, and how often you have to change it. Hope that helped, and good luck

ps I myself am going to ask them if i can use the higher rated filters- say the 1500s- if i switch them out much more often. we'll see.

I've used these Filtrete air filters for several years in different houses and I am very pleased with them. Yes, they are pricey but if you're prone to sneezing fits (as I am), they're worth every penny. Supposedly, the filter media is fine enough to capture even wee tiny particulate matter, including smoke and smog.

In addition to breathing easier and filtering out nasty smells from your house (which are huge benefits), I've noticed that using these filters also helps keep the house and tabletops cleaner, and there's less need for that dreaded chore of periodic dusting.

Another significant benefit is the benefit to your heating and cooling equipment. With a central air system costing thousands and thousands of dollars, this is not a small benefit! These high efficiency filters do a fine job of keeping dirt and dust out of the blower housing in your HVAC system. The traditional fiberglass filters (those cheap blue filters) keep small animals and yard waste from entering into your HVAC, but little else. Ever look at a 20-year-old blower housing? Usually they're caked with lots and lots of fine dust. In addition to being gross, that can't be good for an electrical appliance.

I highly recommend these Filtrete filters and I change mine more often than the manufacturer's 90-day recommended interval. And I think they're worth every penny of their hefty price tag.

I've purchased these 3M filters for the last couple of years to use in my office at work. We have long narrow air ducts in our offices directly over our desks. I consistently found fine black particles(like ground pepper) all over my desktop every morning. I even requested that our Environmental Services check this out. I suspected it was mold(which I'm very allergic to)but was told it was the rubber connectors of the ductwork that was deteriorating and airborne but was "harmless". I decided to take matters into my own hands and purchased these 3M filters to place over the air vent. I had to tape 2 together lengthwise as the air vent is close to 4 feet in length and one filter wouldn't cover the span.I've used velcro tape to attach it to the ceiling and it works great! I change them monthly at my own expense but now have several co-workers doing the same.At the end of each month the filters are blackened with this "harmless" stuff. By the way, I work for a large healthcare facility that was unwilling to make these changes for the employees. Such is American healthcare in 2010!

Ordered the 2 pack of these filters because you should be changing your filter every 3 months, more often if you smoke or have pets. These do an excellent job and are a few dollars cheaper than buying at a local store. I've used these filters for years and will continue to do so.

3M Filtrete 1000 MPR, 6-Pack, Micro Allergen Reduction Filter 17.5 x 23.5 x 1

I really don't know how to do these reviews except to say that a neighbor told me about how well they clean the air (He used them for his allergies.)
Since I have a really bad case of CPR and I am on 3 Liters of oxygen 24-7. I thought it couldn't hurt to try the filter, so I ordered one here through Amazon.com. So when it was time to change filters, I popped it in. Later that same night after I had forgotten all about it until I saw my oxygen tubing just laying on a living room chair. I had gone without the O2 for over 30 minutes. That is around 6 times longer than I had gone in a long time. I went to the computer and ordered a case of 6 right then and ever since I have been using the 3M Filtrete Filters ONLY, and Breathing much better. Don't take my word, try it for yourself, just order one and replace your old filter and give it a couple of hours and hopefrully you will get the same relief I did.

This 6-pack is a very economical (cheap) way of buying filters. Especially because Lowes & Home Depot did not have my size (14x30) in stock. I got the medium-quality filtrete micro allergen because I wanted good filtration, but not the most expensive. They are perfectly suitable, with an indication of which side should face the intake, and how often they should be replaced (3 months). I'm happy :)

While these filters are pricy, they are worth the expense if you have any kind of nasal allergies. These filters pick up a lot of dander, dust, and particles. I have been using a case (6) of these filters per year, so I get an average of 2 months per filter. My home is a little over 2000 sq/ft with three levels and one HVAC system. These do a great job of keeping the house cleaner by reducing dust and dander on each floor. I also noticed the AC requires less maintenance with the use of these filters. The longevity of each filter depends on a lot of factors, how many people in the house, pets, climate, etc. - I see about two months per filter with one dog and two people in the northeast. I will continue to buy these filters because I do notice they catch more particles than the blue filters or anything less expensive. I have allergies and I notice a difference in air quality while others who or less sensitive to allergens may not.

This review is not about the product (which I'm happy with), but the number of filters. Some of the other reviewers complained that they expected to receive 6 times as many filters as they ordered.

I just bought a package of 6 Filtrete filters from Amazon for $60.61. This is a good price, because I've seen these filters sold individually in hardware stores for at least $13. It appears that some of the reviews here may refer to purchases from other sellers associated with Amazon. In any case, I thought that I was purchasing 6 filters, and that's what I got. These filters are a lot more expensive than the cheapest furnace filters, so you should expect to pay somewhere in the range of $10 to $13 per filter.

Are they worth the high premium relative to cheaper furnace filters? I think that they catch more lint than cheaper filters, and that indicates that they are doing their job, but I haven't done any really objective comparisons of expensive and cheap furnace filters.

We decided to try a better quality of filter for my husband's allergies. I could not believe how black this bright white filter turns in less than a week, and I keep a literally spotless home. It's creepy. Our old filter took a month to get visibly dirty-looking. This filter has turned from white to black in a week's time every time we replace them. I find that disturbing, but am glad we upgraded our filter. :)

Does the job for my wife's allergies. Order this separate from other things... this last 2-pack was crushed and deformed by the 5lb bag of almonds that sloshed around the packing during shipping. Was not happy about that. They still work, just a pain to install.
